CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – December 23, 2019 – With the holiday spirit upon us, Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) is pleased to thank members for their continued loyalty to MSGCU and highlight achievements of the past year.
Leading in delivering member value.
According to Callahan & Associates, a credit union research and consulting firm based in Washington, DC, MSGCU ranks in the top 1% of credit unions nationwide in providing member value. More than 130,000 members make it possible for the credit union to deliver excellent member value in the form of better rates, fewer fees, free financial education, grants and scholarships, and other community support.
Promoting volunteerism and community giving.
Each year, MSGCU volunteers time and donates resources to police and fire departments as well as many local organizations in Metro Detroit. This year, the credit union was particularly honored to donate $10,000 for playground equipment to Scarlet’s Smile, a non-profit organization with the mission of building a barrier-free all-inclusive playground in Commerce Township. In all, more than $25,000 was donated by MSGCU to the community and thousands of hours were volunteered.
Supporting students and educators.
As a credit union rooted in education, MSGCU has an extensive scholarship and grant program benefiting local students and teachers. In total, MSGCU is proud to have given more than $150,000 to fuel education and career goals in 2019.
Scholarships were offered to students heading to college or a skilled trades school, teachers continuing their education, and to first responders. In 2019, scholarship funding surpassed $106,000, benefitting 45 deserving individuals.
This year, the Classroom Cash Grants program inspired the public to cast more than 110,000 votes, resulting in MSGCU funding more than $51,000 in grants to 71 teachers from 52 Metro-Detroit schools. The grants fund innovative projects that help spark imagination and passion in the classroom, such as interactive technology, reading libraries, and sensory development.
Accepting awards for member service programs.
With a mission of promoting financial success, MSGCU is committed to sharing free financial literacy education to the community. This year, the credit union was humbled to receive statewide recognition earning first place in the Desjardins Youth and Adult Financial Education Awards by the Credit Union National Association. The awards recognized MSGCU’s thriving member education programs including the Homebuyer’s Workshop and Financial Reality Fairs for teens.
Additionally, MSGCU earned second place in the Louise Herring Member Service Award for its quick response assisting government employees impacted by the 2018-2019 government shutdown.
“While years and decades change,” says MSGCU President/CEO Pete Gates, “there is one thing at MSGCU that will always remain constant: our dedication to members and the ‘people helping people’ philosophy. We continue to be grateful for the opportunity to serve members, give back to the community, and support students and educators.”
MSGCU looks forward to what will be an exciting 2020 including the introduction of a new Mobile App and Online Banking experience for members. Learn more at //msgcu.org/newonlinebanking.
